A New Chapter for Myth & Symbol

Posted by Myth & Symbol Team on

In 2012, Myth & Symbol opened its doors in the Rice Village. Houston didn’t have many independent shops that favored emerging designers and artists who prized craftsmanship over mass-market production. We hoped to help fill that void.

Over the past five years of hosting workshops, exhibitions, charity events, and collaborating with other shops, designers, and area businesses, we’ve created a wonderful community together. Myth & Symbol has gifted us the opportunity to meet so many people, many of whom now are our closest friends. And there are so many of you across the world that we have befriended online—and who, if you passed through Houston, were lucky to meet face to face.

Our lives have recently and radically changed—for the better. Chau’s son Bennett arrived last August and Trang will welcome her son this June! With our families expanding and our needs outgrowing our current space, we have decided to move the store totally online for now.

This is a new chapter for us. Our Rice Village shop will officially shut its doors on May 21st but we will stay open on the web. This gives us the breathing room to operate while we adjust to new-parenthood and brainstorm about the future. During this time, we plan to keep participating in pop-ups and opportunities around Houston. We’ll also be keeping our eyes peeled for new digs, a place that feels right.

We thank you all for your generous support. We’re overbrimming with gratitude. You’ve brought our vision to life. Five years later and we are still constantly honored and humbled that we are—and, we hope, will remain—your shopping destination.

Please stop by and say hello in the coming weeks!

FAQ For Our In-Store Customers

Can I still use my gift card online?
Yes, if you have a gift card with an open balance, please bring your gift card to the shop before May 21st. We will transfer the amount to an e-gift card which can be redeemed online. You can also email us anytime with your gift card info.

Can I still use my store credit?
Your in-store credit will be transferred online after May 21st. Because a contact info is required for all return transactions, we do have a record of all remaining in-store credit. You will be notified via email if there is any remaining store credit left in your account after May 21st. Like gift cards, store credit never expires.

What if I need to return an in-store purchase?
All in-store items purchased before April 30th are subject to our regular return policy. Please refer to our return policy here. All in-store purchases after May 1st will be final sale & non-returnable. There will be no changes to the online return policy.

Will you still offer Postmates Same Day Delivery?
Yes, this shipping option will still be available for orders with Houston delivery addresses. We started offering the service this year & it is a great shipping option if you need an item immediately. A Postmates driver will pick up & drop off your purchase within 2-3 hours of your order submission. The rates are reasonable & usually range between $6-$12 (depending on your destination & order total).

Will you still participate in local pop-ups & markets?
Yes! Now that we will not have a brick & mortar location, we hope to participate in a lot more markets. Please make sure that you are subscribed to our In-Store Events email list as we will transition that category to our "Local Events" email list.

Will you be selling your furniture & fixtures?
Yes! Stop by the shop to check out the items for sale. We will also slowly post photos of available items on our Facebook page in the upcoming days here.

Please email us at if you have additional questions.

Earth Reverie Pop Up at Myth & Symbol

Join us as we welcome jewelry designer Mara Gold of Earth Reverie. Mara will be in town this week to showcase new pieces from her line. The launch collection consists of an ethereal array of gems and stones, inspired by the artist's hometown of New Orleans. Current Earth Reverie stockist include Freda Marfa and New Orleans (and will soon include Myth & Symbol).

    About the Designer
Though Mara has a formal background in engineering and architecture, she has always been interested in sculpture and design. Thus, she left her career in civil engineering and began experimenting with wearable art and jewelry. The self-taught designer draws inspiration from nature and geometry with her work being very sculptural in process and form.  Sourcing of materials starts with a focus on a particular shape or stone. Mara's design process is mostly organic with stones pieced together until the right balance is found, making her pieces limited and one of a kind.

    Introducing Young Frankk

Posted by Myth & Symbol Team on

    Young Frankk Christine Young
Meet Christine Young, the visionary and "hands" behind Young Frankk, a handcrafted jewelry line based in Richmond, Virginia. After conquering Parsons School of Design with a major in Illustration, Christine ventured into metals as another art medium to have under her belt. Though she never wore much jewelry herself, she took a liking to designing her own pieces and in 2012, Young Frankk was born. We've always been awed by Christine's unique way of finding the perfect balance between a minimal, yet bold statement piece. So much so, that we wanted more details on her and Young Frankk. Check out our interview with Christine Young below. We couldn't be happier to welcome the line to the Myth & Symbol family.

Is there a back story behind the name Young Frankk?
Young Frankk is my grandfather's name backwards -  Frank Young.

Where do you pull inspiration from for your designs? The hands are your signature look. Why hands?
I pull inspiration from a variety of sources, whether its paintings, illustrations, sculptures, interior design or architecture. Whatever catches my eye. The Hands were a happy accident. While designing and brainstorming designs for the collection, I was playing with wire designs and this came out of experimenting.

Do you have any personal style icons that you admire? If so, who?
My personal style is very practical, simple and actually kind of boring! I like to be comfortable and no fuss. I wish I had more patience to dress sensibly but if I did I would I want to dress like stylist Sissy Sainte-Marie Chacon, she is goals.

When you’re not in the studio crafting these beautiful pieces, what are you most likely doing?
I am most likely watching scary movies, hanging out with family and friends or hopefully committing to one of my new years resolutions such as reading or painting/drawing more.

If you had to walk out of the door with only one accessory, what would it be?
A good pair of bold statement earrings.

    Meet the Staff: Jenn

    Meet the Staff: Jenn
Hey! I'm Jennifer Robbins. I enjoy hoarding vintage items in my closet, biking around downtown Houston and eating barbacoa tacos. In my off time, I'm usually thrifting or spending my whole paycheck on food. Having a job at Myth & Symbol has been one of my rewarding work experiences so far. I've been introduced to so many amazing independent designers, met great people and the owners, Trang and Chau are the coolest and most down to earth women I've come across. To work in an environment where your co-workers and bosses inspire you is truly a blessing.

    My Style.

Since I've been at Myth & Symbol my style has been shifting. You can usually catch me wearing denim and sporting the jeans and tee combo (I'm wearing a Canadian tuxedo as I type this). But lately, linens and prints have been drawing my eye, especially from designers such as Ilana Kohn and Dusen Dusen. I'm learning how to step out of my comfort zone and embracing the oversized/comfortable (yet flattering) silhouettes.

    My Style Icons.

70's Cher and Diana Ross. (They kill the sheer looks). As of late, I'm digging Solange, Zoe Kravitz, Rihanna and the tomboy in me is screaming Shia LeBeouf (so I can't leave him out). I am drawn to the "I look like I just rolled out of bed but I actually picked this out" look.

    Cher Zoe Kravitz,

    One Fun Fact About Me.

I can talk without moving my mouth. Being a ventriloquist may be my true destiny but they actually creep me out.

    My Cat.

This is my cat, Scout. He's 1 years old. I later found out that I'm allergic to him but I could never part with him.
